Headlights, Spring 2021

The Gallery is pleased to present Headlights, an online exhibit of new work in pastel by Steven Jupiter. When Jupiter moved to the woods of Vermont from New York City, many friends asked if he was worried about bears and bobcats. His reply was always that what he was most worried about was headlights coming up the road at night. Unexpected visitors don’t always have good intentions. These images are meant to evoke that anxiety in the viewer. The destination of the vehicles is unknown, as are the drivers and their purpose, but a sense of dread and unease permeate the work. They’re like stills from film noirs that have yet to be produced.
